Sit on the fence and the Maverick Trailblazers will pass you by

A little bit incendiary... my response to an article on Zdnet about Yahoo!'s new BOSS initiative:
I gotta say, it seems this article is less evidentiary and a lot more rhetoric than anything else. You're methods for supporting your main thesis are bordering on flimsy, and really don't take into account the overriding fundamental shift in a business's philosophy when they choose to make an open source move.

You're reasoning for a 'wait and see' approach feel a bit too contrived to really give serious thought.

The key to Business in the Information age....... "All your data are belong to us!"

Boy has Dreamhost put an expiration date on their long term business viability!

They have taken what is seemingly good idea for their bottom line in terms of support and maintenance of mail server services, and have just sold themselves out of one of the most important aspects of the hosting business ( and most any subscription-based service businesses)...... VENDOR LOCK-IN!!

Micromanagement - A 2nd great article on Javalobby this week

Javalobby had another great article today, this time on Micrmanagment:

Micromanaging - Tasks versus Goals
By Eric Redmond

This is something I've wanted to write about for a while, but held-off for fear of another 10 page rant. But, taking a page from Seth Godin, I've decided to try writing less. Here goes.

Great Article on Programmer Work/Life Balance

My Weekly e-newsletter from Javalobby hit my Inbox today and there was a great posting from a 'guest editor?', David Walsh. Here's the article, visit Javalobby for the original:

8 Ways For A Programmer To Stay Sane
By David Walsh

Being a web programmer is hard work. Long hours, coupled with the fact that we're presented with nothing but problems, can make our job unbearable. Not to mention deadlines and unreasonable customers. Oh, and the fact that we're all casualties of the never-ending browser wars.

Open Wifi == Open Door?

A man in London was arrested for using his Wifi enabled Skype phone on an open Wifi access point. Police actually stopped him when they observed him using his laptop in a public area and busted him!!! Reported here is the article on ZDNet, apparently this is not the first time this has occurred.

Getting a bit tired of the 'Web 2.0' buzzword.... let's rename it!!

Now that the buzzword 'Web 2.0' is on the tip of the senior exec's tongue when speaks about what's next for technology adoption, I was asked by a buddy in my program the other day to explain it what it is...... bit of a problem!!

Why the Google Mashups Editor team chose GWT

Richard Burton, Tech Lead of the Google Mashup Editor Team talked about the choice to use GWT:

Dateline NBC Mole Outed at DefCon -- too Funny!!!

Dateline NBC Mole Outed at DefCon - An anonymous reader writes "Dateline NBC allegedly attempted to infiltrate the DefCon hackerfest with a producer using a hidden camera. The show hoped to tape hackers admitting to illegal activities, but DefCon got wind of the plot and displayed the would-be-mole's photo before every presentation. Dateline refused to deny the planned infiltration.

PubPat Kills Four Key Monsanto Patents

Ahh.... poor little Monsanto, the big bad Pubpat guys are picking on them.... ;)

PubPat Kills Four Key Monsanto Patents - IP Ergo Sum writes "PubPat's request for reexamination resulted in the rejection of four key Monsanto patents. According to PubPat, those particular patents were being used to 'harass, intimidate, sue — and in many cases bankrupt — American farmers.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Drupal Picasa Thumbnail size bug

Since Google changed the Picasa Web Albums Feed API, users have complained that the thumbnail size when they view albums in Drupal is too small ( see issue Something has changed.....)

I've not produced a patched picasa.module but if you make the following change to the beginning of the picasa_display_album_contents function, namely adding the thumbsize parameter to the feed call you should be able to fix the size problem.

function picasa_display_album_contents() {
global $base_url;
